Prayer

Prayer is the secret to power with God for a ministry and for the saint. For example, See: 2 Chron 7:14 says “if my people, which are called by My name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land”…then Jeremiah 33:3 says “call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great mighty things, which thou knowest not”. These two scriptures show us among others the place of prayer,or when we call on God, He listens as in Ps 116: 1-2 and He makes ready the answer we are looking for once we fulfill the requirements for prayers that are answered. You will need to refer to the teachings on prayers that will be uploaded in due course. Let us look at the information to guide us along on the subject of Prayer:

  • Following the tradition of the Lord Jesus Christ, prayer was His life style. He started His ministry by following the leading of the Holy to go in the wilderness to fast for 40 days/nights where He was tempted by the devil, but glory be to God, He defeated the devil. He also end His ministry on the cross in prayer. See: – Luke 23:46 “He said, Father, into thy hands I commend My spirit, and having said thus, He gave up the ghost”.
  • “ ..He went full of the Spirit and Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.” (Luke 4:14; 4:1)
  • We see the early church in Acts 2:1-4, they were in prayer when the Holy Spirit fell on them in the very morning of the day of Pentecost. Luke 18:1 states “And He spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray and not faint…” 1 Theso 5:17 Paul admonishes “pray without ceasing”.
  • Prayer must be by faith. The Lord said in Mark 11:24 “Therefore, I say unto you, what things soever you desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them and ye shall have them.
  • James also writes “confess your faults one to may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16.
  • All the above scriptures enjoins believer to pray – for themselves, family, loved ones, the church for all men and the nation and their rulers – (1 Tim 2:1) by this we commit our God to stand in our behalf and release His power for victory in our lives.
  • We, at EPC World Mission make prayer and the Word very fundamental in all we do, knowing that we have no power of our own except that of God that is released through prayer, and of course by His grace. See: Jobs 5:8-9; “But if it were I, I would appeal to God. I would lay my cause before him. He performs wonders that cannot be gathered, miracles that cannot be counted” (NIV)
  • In Lk 11:3-13 and in Matt 6:9-13. The Lord Jesus was specifically asked by His disciples to teach them how to pray as they saw His continually praying publicly and privately on His. Then He showed them how to pray: Lk 11:2-4. When ye pray say, our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth…”. This same prayer, called by the church, as the Lord’s prayer, in also repeated in Matt 6:6-13.
  • As much as it is good to recite or repeat scripture, it was a pattern for structuring the way to pray and so as we follow the Lord’s pattern for praying we will get the Father’s ear and so as we do so by faith, we will have what we ask for.
  • 1 John 5:14-15. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth us. And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him”
  • We therefore consider prayer and the word as the bedrock for all that we do in fulfilling this great commission. We therefore encourage both private + public prayer for all men.
